When the Same Sex Marriage Act was passed in 2014, I was really pleased, particularly the next day. The sun still shone, the sky did not fall in, civilisation did not come to an end! In fact, the great majority of the British public shrugged their shoulders and got on with their lives. The consensus was and is even more so today, “if that’s what they want to do, let ‘em and good luck to ‘em”. There is still prejudice, but only among a very small minority.
And so it was with great joy that I conducted my first gay wedding ceremony at the Redworth Hall Hotel near Darlington. Both Mums were present as witnesses to see Ron and Gary declare their lifelong commitment to one another. We had exchange of rings, the vows, cutting the cake and signing a certificate to mark the occasion. Many toasts followed!
